Trouble in the land of Griffons

Yesterday, as I was working on the Griffon chapter in my never-ending book project I went looking for a few more details on the early life of Eduard Korthals, the creator of the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon.  What I found instead was that a pretty intense sheit storm is currently swirling in French Griff-land. You can read about it here: http://chiendog.blogspot.com/

Hi Chiendog, which one of the 5 British/Irish pointing breeds does NAVDHA not recognise ?  We have ,as you know, Irish Setter, Irish Red and White Setter (derivatives from the same original dogs ?) English Setter , Gordon Setter and Pointer {English}

I have no finger at all in this pie, I'm just curious as to which of these dogs Navda has decided to drop.

A couple of years ago I was informed of some shenanigans among top French Brittany breeders so the present upset among the Griffon folk does not surprise me. This was how better dogs were developed in the first place. To my mind the biggest pity about all this is that no proper ,verified, breed records are being kept - in 100 years time dog lovers will be making up stories about what went into their "purebreeds."

NAVHDA's rule book indicates that they recognize all 5 British Pointing breeds. What NAVHDA does NOT recognize is the Labrador Retriever which, as you may or may not know, comes in a pointing version in North America (see http://www.gundogmag.com/gundog_breeds/lab_0616/)

Here is the list of breeds that NAVHDA currently recognizes. Note that just because a breed is not on the list it doesn not mean it will never be recognized. In essence, it looks like NAVHDA will recognize any breed listed in the FCI group 7 for pointing breeds (hence the non-recognition of the pointing lab). I can run an Epagneul de Pont Audemer in NAVHDA even though the breed is not on the list (yet)

Sorry Craig but the reason I asked the question was based on the link provided by you. It contained a section titled "Even NAVHDA."  The following is  a quote from it - "In addition ,NAVHDA recognizes the 4 pointing breeds developed in the U.K. "

I concluded from that quote that one of the five breeds from Britain and Ireland had been disallowed for some reason ? Hence my question of which one.
I am pleased to read that all are acceptable to NAVHDA.

I don't think pointing labs are going to go away. I have seen a few over here - one of them was very impressive. Better than a large majority of H.P.R.'s. If I hadn't been very familiar wih her breeding I would have suspected a very recent dose of pointer in her ! She belonged to a friend who didn't even want her to point ! She eventually won a Novice Retriever Trial.

If the U.S. pointing labs can hunt -point and retrieve like her then I am not at all surprised that people are buying them ! Most of the film clips I have seen of the U.S. Pointing labs have shown dogs that I would consider mediocre however.........I think they have got a wee bit to go yet . They needed trained to do what pointers do because of breeding.

I.M.O. NAVHDA is right not to include them - yet !

Sorry, my mistake. I often lump the Irish and Irish Red and White setters together. You are correct, there are 5 pointing breeds from the UK/Ireland, four setters, and one Pointer.
