Thanks everyone. I was really chuft to win our class on Sunday as I'm only just starting to handle Whistle again after my op so I'm not up to full fitness yet and a bit out of practice. I also managed to beat a very well known breeder which made my win even more enjoyable
A nice way for Whistle to finish being shown in puppy as she will be 12mths old on the 26th of this month. Don't know where the time has gone

She's looking good!
I'm just about to enter Teal and she's not in puppy anymore As you say, where has the time gone?

She looks really nice Claire. What are you feeding her on now, btw? Did you stay with the Eukanuba?
|
Claire
|
Yes I decided to stay with the Eukanuba until she was ready to go onto adult food. I've now switched everyone over to Arden Grange. I ditched Burns cos I was fed up of paying a small fortune for a diet that mainly consists of rice and I was having to feed a tonne of it to Harris just to keep the weight on him and come when he starts working I would have to feed him even more

LOL! That's what I felt about Burns as well.
Arden Grange is good, that's what Slate's been on for about a year now. If you want to get weight on Harris, try the Arden Grange Prestige - I had Slate on that at first and had to take her off it because she was getting to be a bit of a chubster! I put her on the Premium instead, and I've also tried their Lamb and their Salmon foods.
However, she has just turned her nose up at her AG this past week, and despite taking it away and re-offering it back to her, she wouldn't eat it and then proceeded to throw up because she had nothing in her stomach DUR! I really need her to eat, because I find it really affects her energy levels when we go out training, if she didn't have a good breakfast. I'm now about to try out Bozita and also Purina ProPlan....

If you want to get some weight on quick smart and give a healthy boost to available energy I find lamb mince works a treat. Harley has pu on a LOT of muscle since switching to BARF although he has needed to have his food cut back as he hit 36Kg! He is now at a much healthier and nicer looking 34

I've just read recently that quite a few people are finding that you have to feed more than it says on the bag of burns.

I don't need to put weight on any of my dogs, it was just that with Burns if I didn't feed double what they recommended then Harris' weight would plummet to an unacceptable level I am now finding that I am feeding much less AG than I did Burns and my dogs are maintaining their weight which is what I hoped for
I am feeding their premium brand as it has the most fresh chicken in it and they also get other extras such as meat, veggies, fish etc. etc. I joined the breeders club so I'm getting a 15kg bag for £24.99 and it looks like it is lasting a lot longer than the Burns 15kg bag which cost me £10 more !!

Also found we had to feed much more Burns than recommended, it was a real struggle to keep weight on Harley (and we were feeding the active food ). No such problem when we switched to BARF and an even bigger reduction in poo size switching to BARF than we had going from pedigree to Burns. Best bit is that switching to BARF has cut the food bill still further and the dogs love it Worst bit is they tend to be a bit too keen sometimes in the morning and pop down stairs to check on their defrosting breakfast

I checked out Burns Active in my look into performance foods - it has about the same %s of protein and fat as other brands' normal (non-performance!) foods!!!
|
Mike
|
Jo,
Biggest advantage of Burns active is its price! No vat to pay so used to pick it up for about £27 a sack.
Neither of our dogs ever went close to their maintenance diets, I think they would have withered away!
Although Grace is now on a bit of a slim down as I had been feeding her too much BARF !
|
Claire
|
Jo thats cos Burns prefer all of their foods to be much lower in protein than any others, so their active brand is probably quite a high protein for them.
I still can't see how it can be right having that much rice in a diet. I wouldn't want that much rice in my own diet never mind my dogs
|
Mike
|
To be fair to Burns though I would say judging from what came out the other end the actual % of digestible protein was quiet high with Burns. As various indigestible and unusable proteins can be included in dog foods to make up the numbers on the packet 20% protein doesn't necessarily mean the same thing with each manufacturer!
In the states the actually hold digestibility info (yes they measure what goes in and what comes out!!! ) no idea if UK arms of American firms hold this info for UK formulations though.
|
Claire
|
I agree Mike. When I switched Nell and Harris from Euk to Burns there was a huge difference in what was coming out the other end. I also couldn't fault how they looked on Burns even though I had to feed excessive amounts to keep the weight on. Having said that, now that they are on AG what comes out the other end is even less
|
Mike
|
I think a lot of manufacturers in the UK have cottoned on to the fact that people are willing to fork out for dog food that isn't packed full of additives like BHT etc. IIRC skinners have switched their ranges over to natural preservatives (Vit E etc.) Maybe there has also been an increase in the quality of ingrediants that some of the premium kibble makers are using?
I am hearing a lot of good things about AG and would certainly consider it if we ever went back to kibble.
|
josie
|
Yes, I think you're right Mike - even Purina Pro Plan doesn't have BHA/BHT in, and only uses natural preservatives, as I checked this before ordering some for Slate. I'd never have thought any of the mainstream, big, producers would have no BHA/BHT in, so maybe things are changing.

I guess I just didn't realise so many peeps would be interested in little old me I'm not very good at blowing my own trumpet, get a tad embarrassed
The congrats are much appreciated though. I've never managed to achieve a JW before and I campaigned Harris for 4 years before he got his SBN and I had a tough time with a lot of facey judging. This JW was really important to me. I'm really very chuft because she actually missed a heck of a lot of shows throughout the summer what with me recovering from my op but she still managed to get it at just 13mths old
