What makes a breed a breed?I was wondering what others thought makes a breed a breed? I am sure a Weimaraner is more than just a Grey GSP but I am not sure why...
And at what point (ignoring out crossing) do dogs bred away from the original "standard" cease to be members of the original breed?

Great question Mike!
I don't know how to articulate what makes a breed a breed but I do know that my two HPR breeds (Italian Spinoni & GWP's) are completely different from each other. It's almost as though they are living up to the sterotypes of their country of origin.... the spins are laid back and the germans are in your face making their presence felt.

I suppose its a recognisable standard and a purpose although the latter probably doesn't hold true anymore.

A certain combination of characteristics ie. shape, size, colour and most of all working style and character/personality; is I feel what makes a "breed" different from any other. It's the combination that is unique to the breed.
Claire you are so right about the stereotypes of their country! Can anyone think of any more?
