I feed green tripe with a squirt of Kronch salmon oil and the occasional egg, chopped green veg and herbs.

Image cannot be a bitmap - it doesn't like them.  Also if it is a large high res image it doesn't like that either.  Avoid '&' in the file name as that throws up errors.

Arden Grange Prestige every time - highly recommended !!

For my dogs they are all fed on Chudleys. Working crunch for the older dogs and chudley puppy for the younger dogs. I find it keeps the weight on them during the winter months / working season and the dogs seem to like it. I used tripe for a while with a pup that was going out to Germany. In the space of a week it piled on the weight but with a kennel full of dogs it gets expensive. I used to buy it minced in bags and add a cup full to there chudleys.

I'm a `lazy man' barf feeder, dogs have never looked better, only downside is the dogs have their own deep freeze...and its better than mine Exclamation  Rolling Eyes  Laughing  Laughing

It's Chudleys for me too - beautiful shiny coats and great muscles, and too much energy Rolling Eyes  Wink

Stevie, you might like to check but I heard a vet on a radio phone in the other day discussing what to feed dogs.  He advised one lady who was cooking her pooch special meals not to use onion, he said dogs cannot utilise onion and it made dogs anaemic over time if fed regularly.

Same here....can't beat it IMO  Very Happy

I have one on Doctor Johns silver Maverick has been on it for years and is quite happy they do get leftover bits from us mixed in aswell. Rumour is and has always been a nightmare she survives on raw chicken bits and the odd bonio. They also have raw lamb bones on a regular basic as a local supermarket dose them Very Happy

There was a notice up in the vets warning of things poisious to dogs which included onions, garlic and mushroomn, ours sometimes have the odd bit of onion or mushroon in the casserole gravy leftovers and it hasent done them any harm but suppose they arnt having that much or that often we dont waste much lol

Garlic is not poisonous to dogs when given in moderation [one/two capsules a day] and many people give their dogs garlic in capsule form as a flea preventitive. I find the smelly ones are best for this for some reason Rolling Eyes

I use chudleys too, buy it in bulk and get is discounted so thats even better Smile

I thought it was strange that they had included garlic on their list as I know alot  of people use it.

I went to a 'training' class where the woman, or should I say girl, running it told all 5 of us that 'garlic is poisonous, choke chains are banned and pinch collars are illegal' it was at that point I started to regret paying her £35 for 6 weeks....and I found out later she worked for a vet Evil or Very Mad  Merlin did learn to sit, down and stand though Exclamation  not, I may add, because she taught us but because I got up the corner and did it with him. The last class she did she had AGILITY jumps out....on a shiny floor and for puppies from 5 to 7 months, when I refused to let Merlin do them she looked very sheepish and put them away then asked us what we wanted to do next Rolling Eyes  Rolling Eyes  Now I keep getting emails from her about training your dog for films and the stage Rolling Eyes  Rolling Eyes

Same as Peter, with a squirt of Kronch slamon oil now and then. Far cheaper than the kibble I was feeding them on. (tripe is <22p a lb)

Where do you get the salmon oil from Mike? We are coming down to Plymouth beginning of February and I could get some....Fish4Dogs stuff is expensive.

Claire's got it right Smile I buy the biggest size they do (2 1/2 litres IIRC) and it lasts for ages, tend to buy it with my Pemikkan bars to minimise overall spend on postage.
Claire

Arden Grange Premium for my lot along with Nature Diet and they get pilchards a couple of times a week.

I was assessing a rescue dog on Saturday and her owner told me she fed her Tesco's Economy range with some chappie thrown in.  Not my ideal combination of food but I could not fault the excellent condition that this bitch was in.

What's the best?...whatever suits your dog Smile

We feed our lot on Chudleys and they are doing very well on it.  Nicola, do you go direct to them to get your discount?

Helen

We get ours from our local Feed Merchants, in their own bags, but basically it is Chudleys, and the dogs look great on it, We buy it in bulk and it is £9 a bag.

Hi Sharon

Pemmikan Bars see ..  http://www.activepetfeeds.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=53

Details :

Pemmikan is an energy feed block, which contails approx. 6000 Kcal/Kg. Pemmikan makes it possible to give your working dog a needed energy boost just before a demanding task without overfilling the dogs stomach.

Pemmikan was specialy formulated for working dogs such as gundogs, sledge dogs and working police dogs. It is now used world wide for trialing and gun dogs dogs too.

The maximum daily ration needed is 100 to 200 grams depending on the size of the dog and its activity. If the dog is full of Energy, it keeps out the adverse effects of the cold and heat which helps keep its performance constant throughout the day. As a plus, it is far more attentive.

Pemmikan reduces the stress dogs encounter in dog shows and other similar situations, such as long waiting periods. It also makes the handling of the dog easier.

The effect of Pemmikan sets in after approximately 30 minutes and it reaches its full effect after approx. one hour. Because of this, it may be advantageous to split the daily ration into several small portions to keep a constant performance.

It is also an excellent product for feeding undeweight dogs without over filling the stomach.

The bar is divided into eight 50gm squares similar to a bar of chocolate for ease of field feeding.

Gundogs both beating and picking up should be given no more than two squares during the day and this will give them the feed, energy and warmth required to last throughout.

Each bar contains 400 grams.

Thanks Karen - they sound very good and we could have done with one of those today!

Sounds very similar to the energy bars that Royal Canin used to manufacture.

Real Pemmican has been around for centuries ..basically the first jerky..it's 'people' food here

Quote:
Pemmican is a concentrated food consisting of dried pulverized meat, dried berries, and rendered fat. It was invented by the native peoples of North America, and widely used during the fur trade and later by Arctic and Antarctic explorers such as Robert Falcon Scott and Roald Amundsen as a high-energy food. Pemmican was among the supplies taken by the disastrous Burke and Wills expedition across central Australia. The supply was spoilt and presumably not eaten, a factor leading to the occurrence of scurvy and death among expedition members. Properly packaged, it can be stored for long periods of time.

The specific ingredients used in it were usually whatever was available; the meat was often bison, moose, elk, or deer. Fruits such as cranberries and saskatoon berries were common, though cherries, currants, chokeberries and blueberries were also used, but almost exclusively in ceremonial and wedding pemmican.

The highest quality pemmican is made from lean meat and bone marrow fat; the pemmican buyers of the fur trade era had strict specifications.

I'll stick to Mars bars I think Very Happy  Wink

I use Pemmikan bars too, they are excellent and a really good way of perking the dog up.  Also they freeze really well and keep for ages.  Don't think I'd fancy eating one myself though, they smell gross!

Thanks Nicola.  I'll look into it once we've moved.

The only time I've felt we needed extra energy was when Harvey had low blood sugar and fitted.  Extenuating circumstances but since then, we do carry sugary biscuits when grouse counting as it is hard work for them...and us!

I've never felt the need for my spaniels, even though they are on the go all day.

feed

we feed royal canin maxi sensible. This is good for keeping your dogs coat thick and also helps fill the dog up more. Less is to be given. We also buy raw chicken necks from our butcher. The royal canin is approx £40 a bag and the chicken necks £7 a box which lasts 2 months. You need a big freezer for these though.
