Wire Haired Vizsla CoatHas anyone any experience of HWVs that havent got any wire? I have a 6mth old bitch who had guard hairs when we got her at 8wks but now looks pretty much like a smooth hair. The litter was half and half smooth/wire - no teddy bears but I did think she would of started getting her facial hair by now. I have heard that it can take up to 2 yrs to come through but someone I was talking to at a show today said she doubted if she would get any now. I know her mom was late getting hers but not sure how old. To me her coat seems to have got a little coarser and denser down her back (maybe wishful thinking) so I am still hopeful!!!
Can anyone elaborate?

I have seen a wirehair with no wire if you can follow that. I thought she was a S/H but no.

i also know of a smooth wirehair, and she was 3+ y/o.
but i also know she has had a litter and has failed to produce a smooth wirehair in the litter.
not sure if that what your looking for?

I don't know if you are only interested in HWV, but we 'knew' a GWP with no wires at all, and he was tall too, very tall.

I judged HWV last year and have taken an interest in them since and I've noticed that the variations in coat is quite dramatic. Apparently some of them do take some time to get their coat.
If I were you, I'd ask Donna Holman as she is more than suitably experienced and has good stock too IMHO.

HWV do produce a variety of coat types. When we had our "two litters" in 8 years we had teddies, proper coat and smooth's.
I would certainly say that body coat does keep developing right up until they are 3 to 4 years of age. Personally I would like to see, as a minimum, the guard hairs, tufts at the backs of the pasterns and a bit of a fringe on the feet and ear edge. Then the coat will come.
If there is less at the time they make their debut's then the degree of coat will depend on how much have they got and where it is. As a breed they are not good at producing to coat type.
I've seen some smooth's who have remained smooth, I've seen smooth puppies who have grown a beard but their body coats have remained very close and slick and I've seen those who by the time are 4 years of age have enough body coat and beard.
If the mother was slow in growing her coat then I would say she will get it in time but it sounds like it will be slow. Do you know if the breeding behind her is OK for coats? Were you at Mid Herts today Shirley as we saw a puppy and the person standing with me said she was a HWV but hadn't got any coat and yet when I glanced across I thought she certainly looked HWV in type.

Yes Sharon It was me, I was going to come and ask your opinion but every time I was about to you were either busy in the ring or deep in conversation with someone else. Its nice to hear you thought she looked HWV in type anyway. She is out of Lanspar Mossar x Kisdons Rough Quest. I know Moss has a good coat and the bitch had beard etc but still quite a close coat.
We got best AV puppy with her but not sure if she judged her as a HWV or smooth!!

You should have come across Shirley as I was just chatting with friends and they are used to me chatting to others. One of those people were Jan on here with Merlin the Brittany 
Have a good look at her feet and pasterns as they are a real good test as to what the coat is likely to do.

A friend of mine has a couple of WHVs and the younger one is only just starting to grow her coat. She's got much more on the face now than she had a couple of months ago, and the body coat is definitely coming now. In contrast, her older dog has always had a good coat right from when he was tiny.
Coats do tend to vary an awful lot, though.
Edited to say she's now about 18 months old.
