Working old/ stale scentHello All,
My older Brit seems to have developed a nasty trait by "loitering" on dead/old/stale scent. My little one seems to ignore exactly what he is working. She also seems to be finding birds far more efficiently than he is. I dunno what to do??
Is it maybe cause I run them together?? Maybe something to do with jealousy??
HELP PLEASE
Regards,

Hi Leon,
Maybe your older dog is just finding it easier to let the youngster do the work? How much older is the older dog? I've found a great improvement in my boys loitering by pushing him on, OK there has been the occasional bump when I've misread him but overall the improvement has been noticeable.
Is it possible to run your older dog alone just to see if he is any different?
Just a few thoughts

Hi Leon, sorry I didn't notice your post before.
Your older dog may be looking for attention. You may be giving , in his mind, too much attention to the younger dog so the older dog starts to exhibit attention seeking behaviour.
I agree with Mikes post - if you have any doubt at all about a point "drive" the dog on, at worst a bird will fly off, that isn't the end of the world. I.M.O. a pointing dog should be running looking for game or pointing - with not much in between the two !

Hello Mike/ Bill,
I think you have it spot on, and its entirely my fault. I should be running them seperately. Strange how things work out, but my older dog picked up billary and I had to leave him at home for our last shoot, so my baby did all the work over the weekend, and I must tell you that she is just world class. Did a duck shoot and she did 40+ meter water retrieves. Fantastic stuff.
Anyway, I have to spend more time with my big boy and get him back to standard. Potentially he is still a good dog. I suppose thats what happens when competition comes along
All the best.
Leon
