She is wary of strangers (men) and needs a proper introduction to men she doesn't know when they come here. Away from home she ignores strangers. She does however take guarding duties quite seriously and you would not be "allowed" to access my car if she was in it!!!

God help anyone who wanted to thieve my car with Connie in it! BenB had to move my car to get his out earlier this year and all I can say is he must be brave!!
Connie really is great but I dont think she would make a PAT dog. I'd say thats down to early socialising though and not her genetic temperament. she is unsure of people who look 'odd' like with massive bushy beards, facial disfigurements, or just dirty looking!
Many dogs will behave aggressively or defensively towards people who look "different" I had a lab bitch who didn't like policemen or men wearing boiler suits. People on crutches or bent over using walking sticks are often looked at with suspiscion too.
Buck may be over-friendly but just think what a wonderful, bomb-proof dog you are going to have when he gets over his adolescent phase!!!! That's what good socialisation is all about.
I'm going to PM you about training.

Hi Annie, he is very slowly improving, a few weeks ago he would leave me and go over 100 yards to say hello to another dog. Now he only goes 99 yards!!!
Yes Lou, in hindsight I probably didn't do quite enough of the meet and greet thing when she was six months plus. When she was a pup we had our garden furniture in her enclosed part of the garden and that summer all our visitors were invited to sit there in the compound so that pup could meet people. But when winter came she was bigger and you couldn't really expect everyone to tolerate a jumping up loony covered in mud.
Having said that Liesel definitely remembers people. Our neighbouring farmer often drops in for a coffee or a beer, depending on what time of day, and she greets him like she did as a pup. Any friends/relatives who have spent any length of time here are recognized and greeted as pals - albeit rather over enthusiastically! People who know how to act around dogs worry her far less than the ones who try to rush past or confront her.
I have been owned by one GWP, Inga. A mountain of a dog. I stand 5' 11" and Inga could put a paw on each shoulder and rest her chin on the top of my head. Loved children but couldn't eat a whole one. Thank God she wasn't laid back as it wouldn't take much of a stretch of the imagination to believe that without her I might easily have become one of the three thousand statistical deaths attributed to "The Troubles" She had to go as the vision of her disembowelling next door's children on the front lawn during Sunday lunch was too easily believable.
Bejasus! I didn't know they did GWPs in "giant size" Liesel only stands 23", I got the "compact" model!
She met a 9 week old chocolate lab puppy last night at our obedience class. It's owner's other 8 month old is her favourite playmate. She was good and laid down when told in order to meet the pup.
I heard them discribed as ferriri with no brakes when I first got one, and that just about sums it up.
Once they get to 10 they become a bit quiter lol
Nice to hear that some of the NZ dogs are Matravers decents, Rumour is a Matravers bitch, they were some of the first to come into the country and they only breed when they want a puppy and all go to working homes, they think I am mad trying to show one aswell.
Georgina son Hugo has now taken over the affix and Rumour was one out of his first litter.
Wires are great dogs and I wouldent be without one although my keeper tell's me every year I should get a nice lab they need work and training(which all dogs do) in shed loads but if you keep at it you will end up with a great dog

Lou - I tried to get in and move the car - and decided very quickly that it was a job for my other half. Connie was fine with her in the front! Not so brave now!
Teasel is hyper outdoors and a sofa surfer indoors. She is extremely friendly to most people - but we have always taken her everywhere from day one. Last night we were in the pub and some girls had dressed up for Halloween - they got woofed at twice before she hid round the corner of the bar from them - and then would keep poking her head round the corner to make sure they were still there.
She has always been around other dogs and small kids and i trust her implicitly with them - she has been pulled around the kitchen floor by the tail, had her ears pulled etc and she is very motherly to kids and will often sit next to them and give them the odd lick.
Anyone who comes through our front gate gets woofed at and then licked.
Generally she is submissive to avoid confrontation but will put another dog in its place if it is trying to get its leg over.
