Hi Emma and welcome to the Forum.  You have some fantastic photos on your website.  I love the idea of swimming in the snow  Very Happy.  Do you find that the dogs need protective footwear, or is the snow soft enough? I've only skied cross-country on tracks in Finland, but I did snowshoe on very soft snow up near Ruka.

Hi everyone,

as for the long tail there haven't been any problems at all. Which is quite amazing taking that Aku's tail is like a stick and if you get in the way when he is wagging the tail, it really hurts! The tail is very informative during working because when Aku picks up a scent he wags the tail in a typical way and when the bird is localized and he points, the tail is totally still and points straight backwards. Did you pick up on something similar, windem bang?

Münstermanager: Snow...there are so many different kind of it Very Happy If the snow is really soft then there is usually no need for protective shoes. However, there was another problem last weekend. Aku always wears a bright orange west while working but that does not really protect from anything. So after three days in the snowy mountains, the underside of his chest was quite red but worst of all, his balls were quite an awful sight... Luckily they appear to be healing alright because I don't want to neuter him  Shocked  He might actally need them some day  Laughing
Later on in the spring, the snow usually gets hard and that's when the hunting gets good because it's easy for the dogs to run and for us to ski. But then the dogs might need protective footwear because if they go through the snow it can be really sharp.
The swimming in the snow is really good exercise for the dogs but it's hard for them to find birds  Smile

Helen, I have found that the willow grouse is an excellent bird to train young dogs. The black grouse is a bit more tricky, they are very shy (at least here in Finland) but it is important for young dogs to learn this. Do you find any differences between the red and black grouse?
