Has anyone had a blood test done on a bitch to see whether she is in whelp?  My friend in Norway did, and it was negative, but suddenly the bitch has got bigger and is fit and well.  We are wondering if an error could have been made. I'm not sure which method of AI they used.

Hi
I have used the relaxin blood test a number of times. I did have a negative on one test, so repeated one week later and got a positive result (whelped 10 pups). Wasn't charged for the second test. I think it is quite sensitive so would now test no sooner than 28  days despite fact the manufacturer states it can be used from day 22. Small litter sizes have been implicated in false nagatives.

Is it cheaper than having an ultra sound?

My friend was advised to do the test at 25 days, but her own vet has said that it isn't accurate at that time.  He has done a survey and foud that most of his tested negative at 25 days and positive at 30 days.  So it is derfinitely sensitive.  I didn't know it could be done in teh UK - might ask my vet today.

Hi
would think the cost is about the same .. my vet doesn't like to ultrasound and prefers to use the blood test, I have been happy with result and so don't feel the need to travel further a field for a scan.

amusing story about a kind way of  collecting semen.  Years ago we wanted seman off a GWP so went to the vet.  My friend was with me and the vet gave us a jar and said to see what we could do.  Rolling Eyes  Well, we took turns trying to get semen and eventually success but realised he had tied in the jar.  We couldn't stop laughing and the vet came in and asked what was wrong.  Embarassed    His comment was well you will just have to wait till he parts with the jar. We were having the seman tested and after all that it was OK

Sequel to this thread was that the test Cecilie had done was taken too early for the hormone to be detected and Akina has 8 fine tricolour puppies to Flash - see other thread.  A fitting memorial to a great dog.
