I have been on at Gary for some time now to let me have some chickens but he says they will ruin the garden  Rolling Eyes   You'd think he was a bloody keen gardner  Laughing   Perhaps if I let him have ANOTHER extension I can have my chickens  Question  Twisted Evil

I think having a supply of fresh eggs is better than having a neat garden!

Anyway, clearly you didn't do the proper basic training when you first took Gary on.  Laughing  Laughing  Laughing

Black Rocks are very good layers, we have 6 and they lay all winter, very hardy.

Light sussex are supposed to be good layers, as well as good meat birds.  As Tracy says, black rocks are good as well - and they look nice.

Claire, you've got tons of room for a small chicken pen and house.

When I move next month I'm taking my ducks(khaki campbells - 3 girls and a boy, all 3 girls laying) as I have a burn running through the garden, but my hens and cockerel are being rehomed.  Where is the best place to get more hens - I'll be just outside Clackmannan.  I've just looked at teh black rock website and realised I have two of them away - they were 7 though.  They were both very friendly birds as well as good layers

This might be (and indeed probably is) a really dumb question, but can you mix and match them??  Could I get a few of each?   Confused

Yes, I had my rescued knackers yard hens, Rhode Island reds, black rocks, silkies, plus home breds all together in a dog proof run.  Ducks were in there too but they mucked up all the grass so they'll be kept separate next time.

At the moment, I've got a while leghorn and a couple of hybrids.  I think most people mix them.

funniest thing I saw last week.  I watched Scribble (cat) stalk my biggest hybrid (I don't name them), when she saw her.  The chicken ran towards Scribble and pecked her on the nose LOL  They also ganged up and started towards Holly.  I intervened and shooed them away - not sure what they would have done!

The other day I heard my cockerel making strange little noises and all the hens went running to him.  He then proceeded to peck at the ground and most of the hens followed suit - one hen went to him and pecked his beak just as a chick would do its mother hen, and he fed it.  He's such a gentleman I shall miss him.
