Hi Mark, We are not sure but all the reading that we have done points to plant awns (e.g grass seeds). The Infection is call 'Diskospondylitis' it first showed it's self on the last shoot of the season but we put it down to a muscle strain and it cleared up after a few days. But the symptons returned when on holiday in the lake district after a hard walk on the side of a hill in deep snow so again we thought he must have pulled a muscle, but this time it didn't go away. We finaly agreed to have him X Rayed (hips and rear leg joints) but the vet spotted something wrong with his spin and this show up so they also took a Spinal Tap which made him worse as his left side was very weak for about 10 days and we are waiting for the inflammation to go down so they can take more x rays to see how much damage has been done to the veribra. We are expecting to take him back for his second set of X Rays on Fri and just hope the damage isn't to bad. Or his hunting days maybe over.
Vet thinks one of two things could have happened when taking the x rays and spinal tap
1 Could of damaged a nerve when performing the spinal tap...this is always a possible problem.
2 May have made it worse when moving Alfie about to x ray his hips and leg joints and trapped a nerve around the damaged area.
We will never know but the vet has been extra nice since then so I'm sure she feels that she may have not helped Alfie during the x rays and spinal tap.
So I am expecting VIP treatment on Fri just in case.
Hi
Alfie had his second set of x-rays and the vet didn’t like what she saw so she referred us to a specialist …..very expensive place I’ve seen 5 star hotels with poorer reception areas. But they are supposed to be the best. Anyway they were talking about a possible operation to put plates in and to take a biopsy of the infected area but on examination decide to do a MRI scan and another spinal tap plus urine sample. They have sent the samples off to try and get a fix on the infection and are confident that after another 5 weeks of lead walking and rest Alfie can then start off lead walks and slowly get him back to fitness. He is now on 3 different drugs and I’m sure if I could lift him and shake he would rattle with all those drugs that he is taking twice a day.
I was hoping to get him fit for the ISCGB Working Test on June 18th so that we could compete in the Open test but there is no way he will be fit enough in time, so we are helping out on the day instead. I think we are going to be the life guard on the water test (Alfie will be sent for any dummies that the dogs fail to retrieve).
Are you coming to this event…….there is never many Spinone competing only one or two but it is the biggest Working test of the season and should have just about every type of HPR working and it is a nice day out. If you do, pop down to the water test and say hello.
