Has anyone used raspberry leaf tablets to help with whelping. I have a bitch due to whelp soon and wondered about this as having quite a lot of pups. Years ago I gave a bitch these tablets and she was too calm which caused problems. Others say it is a help so wondered what is best. Leave well alone or give tablets.?

Gave raspberry leaf tablets to briar with her first litter and everything went fine, didnt bother with her 2nd litter and she took a lot longer to give birth, from 1st pup to last it was 30 hours but first litter only took 8 hours.

30 hours....... gosh I would "never" leave a bitch 30 hours between the first and last puppy
Our local farmer has just done something very similar - bitch scanned with 3 had one puppy and seemed to settle down. We suggested that he took her to the vet to see about the other puppy/s and he said he was going to leave her. 2 days later she started to strain like mad - emergency vet appointment, emergency C-section to remove dead puppy who had now started to break up. Messed the bitch up good and proper and the single puppy died the following day as the bitch was so unsettled. Vet fee currently standing at £500+ Had he gone and got a dose of oxytocin he may have had two live puppies and a nominal vet bill! _________________ Sharon Pinkerton

Thats really sad Sharon, especially when it potentially could have been avoided _________________ Hunting is natural, even foxes do it !

That is sad and like you say could have been avoided
When Tikka had her last litter she had had 8 puppies practically one after the other then there was a 45 min gap, I was about to call the vet because I knew there was at least one more in there because I could feel it, I let her out for a pee (I went with her of course) and under the apple tree she produced pup number nine....I was ready for calling the vet after 45 minutes, there is no way I could have left her for 30 hours
I didnt give Tikka anything for either of her two litters, she was fed as normal and exercised as normal no problems at all, I think with both litters she had had all the pups within two hours max. |

| My goodness 30 hours lucky the bitch didn't have dead puppies as must have been getting tired. Thanks everyone. I won't give her anything. At least she is scanned so know 9 pups on scan so will be more. We never had any bother with Irish except sometimes oxytocin but twice had whelping with wires going too slow. Last time was awful as the bitch who was having her 2nd litter was frantic while whelping and had bloat next morning. Never had bloat before. Everything was great with her after an op but we were nervous wrecks. Les said never again but here we go. If anything goes wrong I may be getting the blame. MEN!!!!! |

We are exactly the same Tracey.
Pat I read a few things about Raspberry leaf that stopped me from using it with the bitches.

Yes it could have been avoided and the live puppy was fine when they took her mother in as I went up with my hot water bottle and my RC milk and fed her so that she was fed and warm whilst the bitch was away.
Anyone else I would have given him an earful but he's the farmer who lets me use his land without question so I bit my tongue _________________ Sharon Pinkerton
