Dogs do see in color, but their perception of color is not the same as it is for people. They cannot distinguish between red, orange, yellow or green. They can see various shades of blue and can differentiate between closely related shades of gray that are not distinguishable to people.

http://www.uwsp.edu/PSYCH/dog/LA/DrP4.htm - This site shows the spectrum as they see it.

I agree with Mikes post. I haven't read any scientific papers on the subject but I have done my own "experiments" over the years. Black is easily seen against most backgrounds because it gives a very strong silhouette.
White is easily seen against most non sky backgrounds - especially if it is moving.

My own theory is [with no proof whatsoever] that dogs are hardwired to pick out white quickly. The tails of many prey animals are white on the underside and so is there abdominal areas. A lurch or fall from a sick or injured animal would I.M.O. quickly be picked up on by the members of a dog pack. They would fixate on it.

Just a theory.  Rolling Eyes

I use white dummies on all marks and sight-blinds.  I only use orange/green dummies for "true" blinds.  The US folk seem to have cottoned onto this before us as they routinely use white dummies for marks.  I have some great stripey Avery hexagonal black and white ones.

The only probs with streamers etc is that the dog often will carry the dummy by the streamer, especially if young.  We took all our streamers off for Grey.
