The blue color was a worded accepted color in the 1944 standard (1943 was the original American standard). The first blue import from Germany came to the US in 1949, and the WCA battled it out until the 1970's when after many rounds of voting the color was finally disqualified. In the mean time, the original Blue was a Top 10 producing sire and many wanted to use this dog for his hunting ability. Decades of breeding had happened before the DQ, and after the DQ many continued to breed them, but the reputable breeders who wished to honor the current standard abandoned them. This is the predicament we are in today... an AKC registerable breed, accepted in every venue except the show ring, and no controls over breeding and no parent club. Now we are 30+ years post DQ, 60+ years post the first Blue. Regardless of cross breeding or not, it's too late to do anything but look forward and do something about a situation that the WCA turned its back on for decades. The DQ obviously did work and did not make the Blues go away, and the BWCA is looking to change that.
I am not a Board or Founding member of the BWCA as my personal feeling on the matter is that the Blue Weim is a Weim, no matter the color, and what defines the Weimaraner is its working ability, not the color. I have both colors and will always have both colors. All my dogs are NAVHDA (North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association) registered and tested, as well as AKC.
As for color, for interest, I'll post some photos. Here is a pup I bred. He is a darker blue. Like the grays there are shades from darker to lighter. (Photo courtesy of Leslie N.)
Same dog as a pup
A littermate. The blue color is dominant so therefore a gray dog will never reproduce blue.
Another littermate puppy
