Well Rosie had her first day on the beating line yesterday and apart from following scent back to the start of the drive on one occasion and chasing after a snipe that she flushed she did pretty well and even managed a retrieve (first time with anything other than a dummy)
Thanks Helen, you're right about her being the only Spin, which is great when she does good but if she messes up it would be better if she was a black lab
Honestly she did better than I'd expected and I think the experience will do her a lot of good.
Marty,
good to see other spinone working, we work ours on a nearby estate, dogging in and doing pick up. We also field trial them as well as showing them and also use them for rough shooting. What way is your bitch bred?

She's show on both sides, like most of the Spins bred in England last year her sire is "Fernando Laesario by Inostricani". Her dam is Calvanace Severina.
Training her has been hard work but well worth it! At the moment she's only working in the beating line with a bit of picking up at the end of the drives.
I think she would be fantastic at walked up rough shooting as most of the game she flushes is within 30 yards of me and often sent in my direction

Hi everyone, I thought that I would just mention that I have been working my Spin (Alfie) now for 3 seasons as part of a small picking up team on a local shoot. All through the first season beaters and guns would keep asking me what sort of dog Alfie was............living in Mid Bedfordshire where if it was not a Lab or Spaniel then it can't be a gundog. It took a long time for them to understand what HPRs are all about. But over time Alfie has gained many fans in his workalility and has often been the main topic in the evening after some really long blind retrieves on runners. I have started to notice that after some drives some of the guns come looking for us to find a runner that the other dogs have given up on. This speaks well of the Spinone scenting ability. This year we have been joined by another Spinone team. So the picking up team consists now of 2 Spinoni, 2 Irish Water Spaniels, 1 ESS and a part time Lab. This must be one of the most strange combination of dogs working as a picking up team, but they all work well together and it's not many birds that get away from us.
We don't do Field Trials as he is far to unsteady on ground game but we do from time to time compete in Working Test through the summer months. It would be interesting to hear of any more Spinone that are out there working.
