Henri's got a new girlfriend...

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/ph...veuoj5gpfK1wE&feat=directlink

Her new owner, A friend of mine (my vet actually) flew to Germany to pick her up. Maisey's kennel name is Uttara vom Fenriswolf. She is from Tanja Breu Knaup's line http://www.weimaraner-vom-fenriswolf.de/

Maisey's owner does not hunt (yet). I will train Maisey for hunting, test her in NAVHDA and hunt with her each fall. Her owner, who works with police and emergency services will train her for search and rescue and run her in those events and help recover lost or injured folks if there is ever the need.

Yesterday, something happened that showed us both that Maisey might just have what it takes to make a good bird dog and a good search and rescue dog.

Here is how her owner described the event:

I was walking Maisey and Walter (my other dog) last night by the local golf course. All of a sudden she froze on point and Walter joined her. Both of them were staring at a clump of trees. I heard this beautiful bird song and looked up to see-a cockatiel sitting in a tree!! Cockatiels cannot live outside when it's below freezing (yes, we still have snow). I ran the dogs back home and returned to find the bird was still sitting in the tree-shivering and puffed up. I was able to get her to perch on a broken branch that I had picked up from the ground and gathered her up inside a towel to bring her back home.

This morning I took her to work, and we called the lost and found and a few other veterinary hospitals in the area. Nobody had reported a missing cockatiel. When my son came into work this afternoon, one of the staff told him about the bird. He comes up to me and tells me that there was a sign for a lost cockatiel next to his bus stop when he was on his way to the hospital! What a terrific coincidence. I called the owner this evening, and she is going to pick her bird up tomorrow.

If it weren't for Maisey and her wonderful abilities, I am sure that bird would have frozen to death last night. What a great start to what I am sure will be a very successful career as a bird dog Smile

So there you have it folks! The worlds youngest Longhaired Weimaraner bird-dog-search-and-rescue-lost-pet-detective!
