Another question - Someone on another site has suggested it may not be worth training Darci while she is in season. Its only a few days in, but I haven't noticed any change in her response to commands. I've noticed a few old habits creeping in, like jumping up and biting, but she has not blanked a command - even in the field with plenty of distractions.
Should I really give up the training until her season is over?

Thanks for clarifying Sue. I agree, that was a good recall, leaving the wabbits behind
Ashley thats a good question and I will be interested to hear other answers as my pup should be due into season in the next few months. I don't think I would give up training as such, although I would have to take into account that the bitch might be feeling crabby or just generally out of sorts and therefore she may not be giving her full concentration and so with that in mind I might just stick to doing some training of basic things she knows really well so that I'm not asking too much of her and I'm keeping things fun so as to avoid failure. _________________ Hunting is natural, even foxes do it !

I think it prob depends on the bitch, Ashley. With Slate, I haven't noticed too much difference and I can keep training, but I have to be aware that she doesn't like to sit down properly and prefers to hover her bum off the floor when in season, and to accept that as a "sit" while she's in season. _________________ Slate and Grey

When my two bitches were entire I still trained with them, i did not notice any change to be honest.
FWIW I think "being in season" can be just another convenient excuse for poor behaviour..................

Hate to say this but apparently every dog that took their bronze and silver on that day passed. The trainer said that the judge (or what ever you call him) was actually very nice and in tune with the dogs. Summat like that anyway
Only hate to say it because the atmosphere might have been good for you and Darci, Ashley. Shame - always next time though. _________________ Lesley & Holly (Age 7.5 - re-home)

That's typical Les!!
TBH, I was quietly confident she would pass, judging by her performance in training class. She is, if I say so myself, head and shoulders above many of the other dogs we train with.
Oh well, there's always next time....
Back to my earlier questions about walking calmly etc etc. Why do some dogs walk 'close' off lead, but not so well on lead?
Out in the field I can ask her to walk close and she will trot along beside me ok. But lately I've been putting the lead on her to walk back to the car and she walks ahead. She is not pulling on the lead, she just likes to get ahead of me. _________________ Ashley + Darci |

Same here Ashley with both dogs. I just go with it so long as she is not pulling as it is hardly competition work walking backwards and forwards to the field. _________________ Lesley & Holly (Age 7.5 - re-home)
