Tracking runners
How do i keep the dog tracking runners - after a shooting a hen bird up the botty it came down and ran - sent coco in for the retrieve and she must have gone more than 100 yards through the woods but then failed to find and came back. I took her to where she lost the track but she had mentally moved on. no encouragement could make her look again. Ideas please!
Tracking runners
Im no expert but would put it down to lack of experiance on runners, she is still young it will all come with time, not much help im afraid

Tracking runners
I've had this, they normally develope with experience HPR's ( Well mine ) like to use air scent even on pricked birds, If they don't find it straight away  help it out by by taking in ground down wind and working back up to the last seen area,
also unless you have spotted the bird going in a direction, don't interfer let the dog use its nose, saw a chap doing that 2 wks ago, dog head down working a line owner calling the dog back ??? to work in the opposite direction.
You will find  training ideas in the usual books, but you can't beat the real thing Smile

Tracking runners
I agree with the other two posts Ben - it is a matter of experience. Once she has successfully collected a few easier runners she will be much keener to hold to the track - she'll have the picture of the "reward" in her mind as she tracks. Leave her alone to get on with it . As I once was told " Who is the one that is out there with a nose on its face ?" ........It sure ain't you !
