Welcome to the board Scott, we have pretty much all the HPR breeds on board now, which one takes your fancy at the moment?

Welcome to the board Scotty.

Have you found a pup yet, or are you still looking?

hi ya,i was thinking gsp or possible gwp,i need a male really as all my friends have males and i think it would be less hassle etc
as i intend to take him to work with me rather than leave him at home(i drive a van)i think the gsp would be a better size as i have been told the gwp are a bit bigger(is this true?)
unless any one has any other sugestions?will be for rough shooting mainly but dont want "another" springer Laughing Laughing

(hav'nt found a puppie yet as am in process of getting a new home and need abit of time)

There is only about an inch between the breed standards of the gsp and gwp, with the gwp being about an inch taller.

If you are wanting a smallish dog, how about a brittany? They are small but are still in the hpr group. There are a lot of brittany owners on here who would be able to advise.

Good luck in the search for your breed and eventually puppy. I'm sure you'll get good advice from here if you have any questions at all.

Btw, I have two gwps.

thanks for the info.do they usually stay close to the breed standard?
i had a look at the brittany at a game fair a few weeks ago and although very good looking dogs they maybe a bit to hairy(?) for me abit to springer maybe?
on the subject of the gwp how much do they molt ?less or more than the gsp's?

I would say the gwp stays pretty much close to the standard although I'm sure there will be ones out there that are slightly different.

I have no idea the difference of moulting between the gwp and gsp but having pointers, that have short coats, they are faar worse than my gwp. I find their hairs get into everything and I hardly notice the gwp's. The gwp needs slightly more attention though as they do need stripping out every now and then and their beards can get a bit manky if you don't wash them ocasionally.

Don't touch a Brittany. They are dogs posessed. Fire in their bellies and built of springs and rubber bands. Hunting dynamoes.

Hair - not as hair free as a poodle - but not bad (well save the loss of winter coat)

Don't fall into the trap of thinking they are like Springers - i have had three Springers and now have two Brittanys. I will not be going back to Springers - ever. They do all a springer does and some; and then go on point and let me catch up Smile

Don't overlook rescue dogs - of any breed, they often have lost their homes because they have such very high drives that 'pet' owners cannot cope.

good luck
