Before you take him out in the fields off the lead Gemma, you need to get the recall 100% in the house and garden.  I always use titbits as a reward but you can use anything he really likes such a toy.

Hi Gemma, I usually start by using the whistle at meal times.  Work out now how many pips you are going to use.  I say that because I always did two but now do four saving two pips for a turn Wink  Vary where you call your dog from i.e. bedroom, garden, all the other rooms until he thoroughly knows what 'come' or the whistle means.

When out on a walk do lots and lots of recalls and always have a treat at the end of it for him.  It gets to be that your recall will always mean good things at the end.  Use a very high reward.  I carry a tube of squeezy cheese with me, they love it but vary that too.

Don't just rely on the whistle just in case you forget it one day (as the trainer said to me last week - as if Rolling Eyes - I am bare without my whistle Laughing )

The other thing to remember is to wait until the dog stops sniffing otherwise you are setting him up to fail.  Look for the head lifting slightly so you get your chance to recall in.  If he ignores you, go and get him or you are just teaching him to ignore you.

Try not to train where there are distractions at first or you could be setting him up to fail again.

PM me your email - I have a couple of articles I can send.
