In the Germanic states records suggest short, wire and longhair were being selectivly bred by the 17th century even though these indegenous breeds did not become seperated for almost another 100 years ( ref Arkwrights Pointer etc).
The German breeding system emphasises the sire line, that's why 5 male longhaired dogs became the foundation of the breed. No shorthair
( this gene is dominant over long ) or wires were included in their stud book which commenced in 1879. Larry was privileged to read the originals in Germany.
All Langhaar stock registered by the VDD must have a German VDD registered sire. For breeding, proposed dams can be approved from outside of Germany provided she has a VDD registered sire and has JBHV gradings if the breeder requires that progeny to be registered by the VDD. The German VDD is only an administrative organisation, breed management is governed purely by the breed clubs. The JBHV administers the testing system which is the same for all the hunting breeds. No Longhairs in Germany are FCI registered, they don't need to be.
Originally Longhairs in the US went down this route the same as the wires, others imported without German VDD sires could not be tested under US JBHV systems so can only do NAVHDA, the Longhair is not AKC registered so cannot enter their trials.
Some say a longhair is a longhair but the Germans would disagree, it can only be a Langhaar if it has bloodlines where all matings have been by German VDD sires, that's why owners in the US using their system say they own Drathaars while the rest have wires.

PARKER, CO – After working together for over a year and rapidly gaining momentum, a group of dedicated Deutsch Langhaar enthusiasts is debuting a new organization, Deutsch Langhaar-Group North America (DL-GNA). With the election of officers and ratification of by-laws, DL-GNA became officially established on September 14, 2007. On March 15, 2008 the DL-GNA will be sanctioned as the 15th Group of the parent breed club, the Deutsch Langhaar Verband (DLV) in Germany. The DLV is a member of the JGHV, the umbrella organization in Germany for all of the hunting dog clubs. The JGHV provides the test regulations, authorizes the judges, and maintains the test records for member breed clubs. Other breed clubs in North America that are members of the JGHV include the VDD-GNA, JGV-USA, the NADKC, the Vereinigter CanAm Deutsch Kurzhaar Klub and the VDD Group Canada.

It appears that the Deutsch Langhaar has finally gained footing among the crowded versatile hunting dog ranks and the breed numbers in the U.S. are climbing rapidly. For years previously, there has been a small following of Deutsch Langhaar enthusiasts in the United States, yet there was no active breed club established that was committed to the principles of the JGHV and DLV. The Deutsch Langhaar, English translation “German Longhair”, is a breed defined by rules and regulations established in Germany and adhered to since 1879. Although the English translation for Deutsch Langhaar is German Longhair, they are two distinctly separate breeds and the term is not interchangeable. The Deutsch Langhaar is bred to standards set by the JGHV and the (DLV). The Deutsch-Langhaar Breed Association defines “pure-breeding” as the preservation of the breed’s appearance conforming to type and of its demonstrated hunting abilities. A Deutsch-Langhaar dog is certified to be a pure-bred if it is registered in the Deutsch- Langhaar Breed Register (ZDL), is issued a pedigree and was tattooed as a puppy and has been bred in accordance with the Breeding Regulations of the Deutsch Langhaar Verband (DLV). It is because of this solid breeding program, that quality versatile hunting Deutsch Langhaars exist today.

Vice President of the JGHV Wolf Schmidt-Koerby wrote a congratulatory letter to the newly formed DL-GNA stating, “The JGHV will support your organizations efforts in any way possible within the frame of our organization. From my experience traveling in USA and Canada, I learned the hunting ways of the countries. Breeding and handling of German Hunting dogs tested to JGHV standards and German breed club standards was a positive change in the hunters and dog handlers approach to hunting. The wish to breed a hunting dog for “before” and “after” the shot as well as the goal to breed “Thru performance to the type” has paved the way for a change to the more demanding European ethical hunting tradition.”

The DL-GNA is an active and dynamic group interested in attracting new members. Our diverse membership includes hunters, to breeders and those committed to establishing the Deutsch Langhaar as one the premier versatile hunting dog breeds in North America. Newsletters are published and circulated quarterly. The DL-GNA also sponsors a booth at Pheasant Forever’s Pheasant Fest held in January. As in 2007, DL-GNA will coordinate both spring and fall JGHV tests in 2008. The DL-GNA will host the 3rd Annual DL-Fest in South Dakota in November of 2008. This year’s DL-Fest will be kicked off by the second annual General Membership Meeting and Deutsch Langhaar Breed Show sanctioned by the DLV. DL-Fest is a members-only event where the group meets for several days to hunt on both private and public land. The DL-Fest is an enriching experience where group cohesiveness is strengthened, and lifelong friendships are built. At Waverley Gundog show last Saturday I remarked to the lady standing next to me in the BIS ring that it was nice to see a Deutsch Langhaar in the ring.  She asked which it was and said 'Oh, I thought that was a German Longhaired Pointer' Rolling Eyes  Laughing  Laughing  And she was serious!!!!
