What a great day full of more surprises for me.
The first drive started in torrential rain but after that stopped we have had a great day.
Mugi tried very hard to nail his first pricked duck - a mallard drake. He struggled on the opposite side of dense bramble cover for well over a minute but just couldn't grip the bird well enough. He was very frustrated to lose it , when I thought about it though poor Mugi had needed a partial dental clearance soon after I got him so he probably didn't have enough nashers to get a good grip.
Second drive and not only did we get the better part of an asparagus field to work for ourselves we then got asked to go and work some rough cover, Mugi acquitted himself well. Towards the end of the drive we were all told that we could work our dogs at will, I let Mugi run free and he immediately dropped into a lovely quartering pattern moving himself into a position to work a cheekwind. Although he wasn't really doing what the shoot needed he was not interferring with the spaniels bustling and he was working a pattern approx 50m either side of me. He produced two partridge for his trouble but neither were hit . Sadly his pointing is pretty much non existent at the moment with him having been beating so much.
After the final drive of the day he had his first opportunity to clear an area of ground and he produced a lovely cock phezzie, in reality he found it and I retrieved it , I think he was a touch tired as this was his third day out this week.
Surveying the drive
Resigned to waiting - AGAIN
Yippee, I'm off
Mum, I stepped on a stingy thing!
The view towards the shooting lodge (beyond the bank of trees in a further valley)
Mugi being social with his friends
A certain old man is now sleeping soundly as he is out for the final day of the season again tomorrow!!!!!

Have a great day tomorrow Sue, I'll be out with Buck picking up if the wild beaters dogs leave me anything to pick ! That 1st photo of Mugi reminds me a lot of a relative of his who had the same self confident almost arrogant look !!! Hope he has a great day too.

We both had gread days then
I took Rumour out having decided I had mucked her season dates up Maverick is taking no notice of her at home and she wasent bothered by any dogs yesterday.
There wernt that many birds about and most people had dogs so she only got to retrive 5, she should of had another 3 but they were nicked by spanials
Our best retrieve was by chance on the same field that I have a great picture of her grand father retriving on(that is used on the club web site at moment) the wood was being pushed out over a plough field most of the guns were in the wood one end and then close up to the wood on the plough. I was stood back by the stream like nornal and the keepers son (who is 15 and a excellent shot)was stood across he middle of the field from me. A high dark cock came over and he had a pop at it and it fell about 200 yerds behing me against hedge and ditch I knew that she had marked it and after a bit I sent her by the time she got to the hedge she had lost sight of it and started working the hedge and ditch she came back into sight just as the whistle to end the drive went she looked at me and I whistled and signled left and she went and pickeed it. As she got nearer to me I turned and walked away she put it down about 20 ft away and I told her to fetch it and she brought it to 3 ft away(like several on here with their dogs going through the terriable two I need to work on presentation) but I was happy with that.
She hunted really well all day I was so chufed with her she dident bugger off she sat relax next to me during drives infact I was feeling confident enough with her to have her off lead for 3 drives, mind you its not like the beginging of the season with birds raining down around your ears. But those that she was seeing fall she was marking and not attempting to run in.
The finial drive our 8th the keeper said I had just aswell come with him and beat through she worked like a dream it was a wood strip with alot brambles she was working between me and one of the other picker up birds were being put up and if they were going back he was shooting over her head and she was totally steady she was no attempting to join in the scrum with the spanials to get to the fallen birds mind you it might of been different if it was in open fields and she wasent knackeredd lol.
Yesterday it felt for the first time that everything was coming togeather and we were working as one
Sorry if this is long
