Wondering whether to pursue first KCGC bronze, silver and gold before looking into gundog training and tests.

If you're a beginner and getting to grips with it all, I think it's a good idea to progress through the KCGC scheme first. There are a few exercises on the Gold test which are very relevant to gundog work (the sit-at-a-distance or remote sit being one of them).

However, you can be teaching whistle cues (recall and sit) and training retrieving at the same time.

I took my dog to Obedience classes first and feel it helped greatly with initial stages of Gundog Training.
Plus great socialisation if nothing else.
