Hi Tom ... we all started somewhere!!! Welcome. I don't usually use this much, however have been a member for some time!
So, how much do you know and what support are you getting right now? Are you involved with any clubs or people that already train?
I know when we first had our first viz (which was our first gundog as well), having been brought up with GSD's, and trained both those and border collies ... when we had Iggy it was like never having had a dog before!! I thought I could control any dog ... yeah, right ... I will tell him off, send him to his bed .. and the next minute he is standing between me and the kitchen cabinet and my hand is rubbing his ears!!!!!! Nightmare!!! Vizzies need consistent handling!!
Anyway ... enough of my drivel ... we have Iggy (5) and Barney (a rescue viz) 14. I do trial Iggy, however have made loads of mistakes along the way.
Welcome and I hope you get lots out of this forum ... there is loads to learn ... and many people on here with loads and loads of knowledge ... pick their brains!
Good luck ... let us know what you have been doing ... _________________ Kim x |

Hi and thanks for the warm welcome
As to the training, from a pup we have been going to a training club with Dexter doing the basics and working on the kennel club good citizen scheme
he has his bronze and we are working towards his silver.
From the day we got him we have been using the whistle on recall and sit and working at distance with the sit stays, hand signals etc.
We have not done any specific working training basically due to lack of knowlege and know how
From a young age he has pointed and now will stalk and point at rabbits, birds etc. its great to watch him on the fields especially with wood pigions.
He is so high energy and eager to please the problem is training me! |
