There is a notice it was sent to weimaraner breed masters and a copy of it can be found in one of the german books there is also a reference to it and a copy in the weimaraner chronik.
I thought it was a little odd because of the connection with the dogs but there is also reference to hitler not liking his friends 'hunting' activities (shown in a documentary of footage taken from the time of Hitler during his private moments I'll try and find the documentary name but its running on british tv at the moment).
There are lots of things that have survived if you know where to look for them and what the titles are, Sylvia has just found an amasing collection of old pedigree record books, I have some others both before 1900 and after but there is a noted period where there are limited records available.
I am not sure if this article was a piece of warfare propoganda or something else but it is something that I have come across. I fyou don't have a copy of the chronik its an interesting book, there is some I am struggling to translate and some are hunting receipes for the game killed but it also has some nice pictures and article in it which are of interest if you are interested in history.
I'll look you out the notice.

I have no idea german history is not my interest only the weimaraner stuff I certainly have no interest in hitler or the nonsense that he created. I've looked for pictures of Hermann G for ages so if anyone has any I'd be interested to see them. The documentary series thats on at the moment has been shown before but its very interesting if you like that sort of thing. It may have been a translation error I'm not strong with my german and am using a translator.
The military fair in kent is also a great place to find things if your looking for things from hitler and the germany army. They had some really interesting personal diaries on one of the stands it was a little sad really, along with lots of personal photo's (families, holiday snaps, people in their uniforms etc) I didn't find any of the weimaraner though. |

This is something I have never read before. What is your source for this?
As a bit of a history buff, I must admit that I find it hard to believe. First of all, the gestapo (Geheime Staatsolizei) was a part of a totalitarian regime absolutely obssessed with record keeping. EVERYTHING was recorded. Even if for some bizarre reason they had banned record keeping, the ban itself would have been recorded. At the end of the war, the allies found hundreds of tons of nazi records, 450 tons from the foreign office alone! The records of the German navy were so detailed they recorded every bit of ship traffic, signal and movement all the way back to 1868* To suggest that the gestapo "banned record keeping" seems a bit far fetched.
Further, one has to wonder why the gestapo would spend any effort at all trying to get rid of dog breeding records. They did little or nothing to destroy records of genocide, torture, murder and the like, why would dog pedigrees be banned and burned? What purpose would it serve? |
A little bit late reaction, I am sorry didn't see this post earlier
I didn't hear of destroying as well. But what I do know is that Hittler banned the Deutsches HundeStammbuch (DHSTB) in 1935 all dogs had to be entered in the Reichszuchtbuch (RZB). What happend with DHSTB records. I have no idea. What I do know is that they are hard to get. I also don't know if the VDH keep the records from the old DHSTB or only from the RZB. I didn't get an answer on that question to the VDH.
Why the Weimaraner is so hard to find history from is because it is entered in all kind of studbooks and quit late got its own studbook. Most breeds are easier to track then the Weimaraner. But well that makes it also a nice hobby

Finally, what makes me really doubt the suggestion that the Gestapo had anything against the Weimaraner or the record keeping of the club is the fact that in 1933, in the same year the Gestapo was formed, the name of the man who formed it, Herman Goering, appears in Weimaraner club records as the registered owner of a male Weimaraner named "Ponto aus der Grute". Surely, if the man who invented the gestapo allowed his own name to be recorded in the club archives, there could not have been much of a movement to "ban record keeping". And if there was a sudden weim pedigree burning frenzy later on, wouldn't you think that Goering's record would be the first one into the flames? |
Is there anybody who has this records? I am still searching for it that Goring was the owner of Ponto aus der Grute, the info I have does not tell me Goring was the owner.
By the way Ponto is born in 1935 so it will be difficult that he owned him back in 1933.
I have 2 pics of Ponto, and as the Germans did in the early days is telling the name, owner and handler and so on.

If there is a lack of Weimaraner records from the nazi period it is most likely due to the fact that the country was at war. Millions of Germans perished. Among them were surely many weimaraner breeders and owners. Not to mention that the country was almost leveled into a vast parking lot by over 4 years of incessant bombing. It is actually quite amazing that any records at all remain.
(as an interesting side note, Dr. Petri indicates that by 1936 there were an average of about 100 weim pups born per year. By 1945, the breed hit its lowest point, with a total of 10 pups born that year.**

1936 - 107 Weimaraner entered in the Studbook to be exactly. And some oldies as well. I think to registrate the older dogs from out of the DHSTB into the RZB.
And in 1937 they finally got their own studbook. |

| I have spoken at length to the large Wire Haired Irishman who has I believe the only kennel of Slovakian Roughaired Pointers in Ireland. He told me that when this breed (SRP) was established the breed club asked the Weimaraner Breed Club in the Country of Origin ( Germany ?) for permission to register them as Wire Haired Weimaraners. This permission was declined so they were christened Slovakian Roughaired Pointers. |
