Yesterday my gwp pup was born. Was a day I have been waiting for for nearly 2 years.
Unfortunately the bitch had to have a C section as she appears to have been dliberately poisioned She went to the due date so the pups have a fighting chance there but they will be without mum for a few days yet at least if she come through. The pups are home and being hand fed for now and we can only hope mum is back within the first week.
How much of a disadvantage to the pups is it to not have the colostrum (sp) and the early bonding with mum?
I've had a bitch who had a c section & the pups were fine - in fact one of them I have just made up to Sh Ch It was a few hours before they fed from her but they seemed OK.
I have had another bitch who had NO milk at all, not even a drop so I hand fed the litter of 8 every 2 hours for 2.5 weeks Those pups were fine & are now 8.5 years old. I started to wean them & then her milk started The pups suckled from her all the time just didn't get anything from them!
Hope your pup will be OK and the bitch of course. Having had a bitch [in fact the same one who had the c section] be poisoned only this year I know how worrying it is. _________________ Claire Minstergate Weimaraners
I'm sorry to hear about the poor bitch and her puppies being born in such a way
The Mustwork people completely hand reared a very big litter of wirehairs after the bitch died a few hours after a c-section. They obviously found it hard work to feed and clean every couple of hours but they did it and the pups seemed to manage far better than we all could have hoped.
Over here in the UK you can get colustrum type milk which people use in these instances and if the breeder (is it Jason?) can get hold of the Royal Canin milk for puppies over there in NZ then that is a brilliant milk product for puppies. _________________ Sharon Pinkerton

pups are doing ok, mum is knocking on deaths door sadly
we shall know in the next 24 hours if she's going to make it, major liver overload and almost shutdown.
not my litter but sired by sweep, the litter is a few hours away but i will find more out tomm when i go over to do the tails and dew claws.
they had a lactating lab bitch there today so hopefully she is able to help out.
How very sad indeed, even more so that the poor bitch was poisoned on purpose
Keeping everything crossed for the dam and her babes. I hope she gets to see them and nurse them as nature intends! _________________ Hunting is natural, even foxes do it !
Whenever life hands you lemons, grab the salt and add the tequila
Fingers crossed for the bitch and I hope the scum who has poisioned her get's his/her just rewards
I hope the lab will take the pups on as she will do a far better job than the pups being hand reared - it is such a hard job to hand rear and the pups generally aren't so robust.

I went down and saw them today. Bitch is 100% better than yesterday and is eating now. We took the smallest pup back to the lab today but she had very little milk. Bitch is producing a small amount of milk but not enough for the hungry mouths and they are being bottle fed mostly. Bitch is lying with the pups and sort of cleaning them but not properly.
She had alot of fluid in her uteris which may have been putting pressure on her kidneys and caused the problem, not poision.
Things are on the way up. Bit of a change from a day ago when the vet rang to see what time during the night she passed away.
I'm pleased to see that the bitch seems to be better than she was
If she feels "rough" then she may not want to clean the puppies so you can suggest the breeder get some human baby wipes to use themselves if they think the bitch isn't getting the pups to pee and poo as they puppies cannot do that themselves at this stage. Or if she is doing a bit of cleaning then could gently smear something like butter on the puppies in the hopes that the bitch tries to wash the butter off and thereby cleans the pups up at the same time.
In an ideal world then the bitch should be keeping them clean but providing they know that the puppies are peeing and pooing if their little bodies are a bit mucky then it's not the end of the world - use the baby wipes if they are bad.
Keeping the puppies suckling off the bitch will encourage the milk to come in but the most important is to make sure the pups don't de-hydrate so keep their fluids topped up.
If the bitch remains "under par" then the breeder will be able to start and introduce solid foods from about 14 days old - not ideal but it can be done. But if that has to be done then don't go bothering introducing milky stuff - go straight onto softened kibble as there is more goodness in the kibble than milky stuff. Years ago we hand reared a cocker from 14 days on this but we had to pop the kibble pieces into his mouth for his first few feeds and then let him suck on our finger as he didn't know what to do with the kibble but he learnt very quickly to eat the kibble and he didn't look back.
Keep us posted - especially about the bitch
